Part 101:- System Center Essential 2007 SP1 Pre-requisite

Microsoft System Center Essentials 2007 SP1 (Essentials 2007) is a new management solution in the System Center family of IT systems management products. This product can support up to 30 servers and 500 workstation in a single domain. It is suitable for mid-size business which provides

-Proactive monitoring and troubleshooting diagnostics for your Windows-based servers, Windows-based clients, applications and network devices.

-Software Update management for Microsoft and third-party applications and devices.

-Software deployment of MSI and EXE installed software packages, including third-party applications, and Office 2007.

-Hardware and software inventory with 30+ attributes collected for things like available disk space, RAM, and installed applications with version number.

-Integrated reporting including 50+ reports for things like inventory, update deployment status, and automated daily health status reports for your IT environment.

In order to install SCE, you need to fulfill the following system requirement:-

a) Windows Server 2003 with SQL Server 2005 SP2 Express Edition or
b) Windows Server 2008 with SQL Server 2005 SP2 Standard Edition. (SQL Server Express Edition is not supported in Windows Server 2008 installation). That's why you need to install SQL Server 2005 with SP2.

In addition, it is advisable to install Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2008 and install hotfixes:- 954049. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954049/). If you did not install SP2, you need install the following hotfixes as listed in this website:- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953141

Hardware requirement:-
-min 20GB for storing Software update
-2GB RAM (recommended)
-x86 or x64 CPU (min 2.Ghz).

SCE can manage the following computer

a)Client Computers
-Windows 2000 Professional SP4
-Windows XP SP2 (x86 or x64-based)
-Windows Vista (x86 or x64-based)
-Virtual clients with above operating systems

b)Server Computers
-Windows 2000 Server SP4
-Windows Server 2003 SP1 or R2 (x86 or x64-based)
-Windows Server 2008
-Virtual servers with above operating systems

I'm going to use Windows Server 2008 as the base operating system in the SCE installation. To install SCE in windows Server 2008, you need to install the following pre-requisite components:-
- tick all components in the IIS
- .Net Framework 3.0.
-For SQL Server 2005, make sure that you install SQL database Engine, Integration Services, Reporting Services and Management Tools.
-install SQL Server 2005 SP2 (minimum)

Once you have all the pre-requisite component, you can start the SCE installation. I will demonstrate the installation in next upcoming article.
