Instant Recovery For Physical and Laptop To Hyper-V

Veeam Backup & Replication (VBR) has features called "Instant VM Recovery" which allow you to mount the backup data to hypervisor and boot VM without restore the system. This ensure availability for the system. Instant VM Recovery is work on virtualization platform.

How about Physical Server or Workstation availability?

Most people will use backup and restore method. But it take longer to bring up the system when
  • hardware faulty
  • legacy hardware - no spare part
  • loss of laptop

Veeam Agent allow you to backup and restore physical server, workstation and cloud virtual machine.

With new enhancement on Veeam Backup and Replication v9.5, you can use Instant Recovery to ensure availability of the system while waiting for hardware replacement.

Learn more on how to integrate Veeam Agent/Endpoint with Veeam Backup and Replication:

Process:
  • To start with, you install Veeam endpoint/Agent for Windows into physical server
  • Backup entire volume to Veeam Repository [ Integration with Veeam Backup & Replication]
  • When disaster happen, without restore/ new hardware, you can initiate "Instant Recovery' from Veeam Console.
  • Select a Hyper-V Host in your environment where backup data is mount to.Backup data on Veeam Repository is mounted to target Hyper-V Host.

If you don't have Hyper-V host, don't worry. Just install Hyper-V roles on Veeam Backup Server.
Below screenshot is how to initiate "Instant Recovery to Hyper-V VM"

Cool right! We able to bring up the system within 1-2 minutes.

Powershell Direct in Action

Powershell Direct is one of the feature in Windows Server 2016 which allow you to interact with guest VM from the host without any firewall or network requirement. The best part is without remote management configuration.

In previous post, we have talked about it here:- http://www.ms4u.info/2015/08/win-2016-tp3-hello-powershell-direct.html

With Powershell Direct feature, we able to execute powershell command and communicate  to guest VM from the Hyper-V Host.

How about leverage on Powershell Direct to backup application aware processing without
  • network communication
  • firewall configuration
  • remote configuration management
This is useful especially your test environment is not connected to network but want to able to execute powershell command or backup application data. Check out below on how to use Powershell Direct in action.

Our test scenario:-
  • Hyper-V Host running Windows Server 2016
  • Guest VM running Windows Server 2016 with network disconnected

  • Veeam Backup & Replication v9.5 to backup VM.
  • Enable Application Aware Processing
  • Enable Guest File System Indexing

Start backup the VM

Without Powershell Direct, your backup job will fail because it cannot communicate to guest VM via network to backup application aware processing data .

However, with Veeam Backup & Replication v9.5, backup job has completed 100% without any error. From history, we able to see that the system has failed over to use Powershell Direct to complete the backup.
