Can I Run VM Created on Intel Processor on AMD Server?

I just came back from Indonesia on business trip. Before I go to customer place, I’ve created a virtual machine on an Intel Processor using Windows Server 2012 R2. However I found out that customer environment has servers powered by Quad Core AMD Opteron processor.

Well, I ‘m not sure if it really work. So decided to take a risk by exporting the VMs running on Intel processor and try when at customer place.

Guess what? I was able to import the VMs and the entire VMs was able to boot and set as High Availability VM. The only problem is those VMs which is in “Saved State” .The VMs cannot be imported in. The only way was delete the “Saved State” before import it.

Therefore for those who are intended to run a VM created on Intel Processor and run on AMD processor, please make sure that you’ve properly shutdown the VM. Do not leave it in “Saved State”.

My scenario:-

  • Physical Server Installed with Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V
  • Guest operating system running Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 R2
