Restore System State for Domain Controller using DPM 2010 or DPM 2012

In order for you to restore System State (which contain Active Directory) for domain controller, you need to recover System State using DPM 2010 or DPM 2012 to network share or DC Virtual Machine itself.

Let say for example:

I use DPM 2010 or DPM 2012 to restore System State to DC VM itself. Then you need to restart the DC to Directory Service Restore Mode (DSRM). To do that, press F8 when reboot. But sometimes, the VM boot up fast than you press the F8 key. Therefore, you can use the following method

GUI option

a) Go to Start > Run > Type msconfig.msc

image

b) Click on Boot tab, select Safe Boot on the Boot options and select Active Directory repair.

c) Click OK and select Restart to reboot into DSRM

d) Login using DSRM authentication

Command line option

bcdedit /set safeboot dsrepair

shutdown -t 0 -r

To recover System State:-

a) Share the folder (which contain System State) that you have restore using DPM

b) Open Windows Backup snap-in from Administrative Tools

c) Select Recover

d) On Recovery Wizard, select “A backup stored on another location” and click Next

image

e) On Specify Location Type page, select “Remote shared folder” and click Next

image

f) Enter share path

image

g) On Select Backup date, select the date and time before click Next,

image

h) On Select Recovery Type, select System State and Click Next

image

i) On Select Location for System State Recovery page, tick Original location and select Perform an authoritative restore of Active Directory files

image

j) On confirmation page, click Recover

image

Once restore complete, set to boot normally using command line before reboot the server.

bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot

shutdown –r –t 0

WDS Configuration on VMM 2012

Before you start to perform Hyper-V Host bare metal deployment using VMM 2012, you need to initialize WDS after you have added WDS roles.

After that, you need to configure PXE response

  • Respond to all client computers (known and unknown)
  • Check require administrator approval from unknown computers

image

Note:- Remember to add PXE server into VMM 2012 before start deploying.

Relevant steps that you need to perform next:-

Troubleshooting Bare Metal Deployment on VMM 2012

In order to identify the issue/problem that you encounter during bare metal deployment, you need to check the  VmmAgentPE.exe.log before reboot the server.

Error1

Press Shift + F10 to open a command prompt

Error2

navigate to x:\vmm folder and create a copy of vmmAgentPE.exe.log to x:\vmm\error.txt. Once it has successful create a copy, open the error.txt.

Error3

Read and identified the issue that you face.

Hope this give you a clear idea of why the bare metal deployment is failed when using VMM 2012. Good luck.

Bare Metal Deployment using VMM 2012 on Cisco UCS Server

Last year i’ve covered bare metal deployment on DELL R710 and i have blog about it in here. This round, i ‘m going to talk about on how to do bare metal deployment using Cisco UCS server which i just received for my R & D scenario.

Without wasting any time, let get started:-

Servers specification:-

  • Cisco UCS C210 M2
  • 2 X Intel CPU X5650- 2.66 Ghz
  • 2 X 146 GB HDD
  • 48 GB of Memory

Pre-requisite:

1. Go to server BIOS and proceed to CIMC Configuration Utility.

2. Configure the following settings:-

  • Dedicated – Yes
  • CIMC IP Address
  • Default Password

3. Make sure CIMC NIC can be ping and access from browser. To test, browse to https:// Your CIMC IP

Login using the following authentication:-

  • username: admin
  • password: password

Here is the CIMC page

Now let move to VMM 2012.

1. Create Cisco UCS Profile

2. Provision host using VMM 2012

The following step will be simplify as previously i have blog the entire steps in here.

1. Open the Library workspace

2. On the profiles navigation pane, select host profile

3.Right click and create Host profile.

4.  Enter Profile name

image

2. Select VHD that you want to use.

image

3. Enter hardware configuration setting such as ip address, disk configuration and driver tagging.

image

4. Enter the rest of the configuration such as domain, password, timezone on the OS Configuration page.

image

imageimage

Once complete configure the host profile, let move to provision a Hyper-V Host

1. Go to Fabric workspace

2. On the ribbon, click Add Resources and select Hyper-V Hosts and Clusters

image

3. On the resource location page, select physical computers to be provisioned as virtual machine hosts.

image

4. On the Credential and Protocol page, create a new Run As account:

  • Name: Cisco UCS
  • username: admin
  • password: password
  • Protocol : IPMI

image

5. On Discovery scope page, enter the CIMC IP Address

image

6. Select the provisioning options and specify the BMR Cisco UCS Host profile that you have created in earlier steps.

image

7. Enter deployment customization options and review the summary. Get the CIMC MAC address from CIMC Web page.

image

image

8. On the CIMC web page, launch KVM Console.

Now, let me go for my favourite coffee break “starbuck” while waiting for VMM 2012 to do Hyper-V Host deployment. Smile
